UPDATE: Car in flames on A27

THE Southwick Tunnel has been reopened after a crash caused rush-hour chaos.

The A27 was fully opened just before 9.30am, but some barrier repair work will have to carried out in due course.

Police had closed the eastbound carriageway 500 yards beyond the Brighton end of the Southwick tunnel earlier today, following a crash involving one car.

Just after 7am, a Vauxhall Vectra travelling east collided with the central reservation, overturned and caught fire.

Other drivers stopped to help and managed to free the woman driver, who at this stage is not thought to have been seriously hurt.

She was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

The eastbound carriageway was closed and traffic diversions set up while emergency services dealt with the incident.
