Update: Council beach cleaning operation is still underway

The substance, although still being tested, is believed to be palm oil, which can be poisonous to dogs and other animals.

It was spotted on Lancing beach on Sunday, and then in Worthing yesterday, with reports it has now been seen on beaches as far away as Dover.

A spokesperson from Adur and Worthing Council said: “We are informing our residents, via local media, that this substance may be a danger to dogs, small dogs in particular and to keep their pets away from the coastline until informed otherwise.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and are in constant contact with the Environment Agency, Maritime and Coastguard Agency and our own Parks and Foreshore team.”

A spokesman from Worthing Beach Office said: “The amount of the substance is diminishing at the moment and it could be down to the water and tide. We would still ask dog walkers to stay above the high tide at this time.”

Results from the testing labs are expected to return Friday afternoon.

In an official statement posted on YouTube, Andy Edwards, Head of Environment for Adur and Worthing Councils added: “We would like to thank the lady who first reported into us. It gives us the information we need to make the right decisions.”

People are encouraged to report further incidents to the council on 01903 239999 or to the Environment Agency via their 24 hour hotline on 0800 807060.
