It took 50 firefighters to bring the fire at the Keith Jay store in Bognor town centre under control after it went up in flames shortly after 6pm yesterday.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said a fire engine is likely to remain in place at the site throughout the day, and the investigation into the cause of the blaze would start this morning.

Initially, four fire engines were deployed to the shop but the ferocity of the blaze meant a further eight fire engines from West Sussex and Hampshire were called for.

Firefighters were greeted by intense flames on the first and second floors as well as on the roof space.

Worthing aerial ladder platform and two of the county’s newest fire engines with a compressed air foam system (CAFS) on board were used to combat the blaze.

Relief fire crews remained in attendance throughout the night. They were supported by Red Cross volunteers who are supplied refreshments.
