UPDATE: Man shot himself during Littlehampton firearm incident

POLICE have just released this statement regarding the Littlehampton firearms incident today (Friday, September 30).

Police were called to a house in Horsham Road, Littlehampton, following reports of a man having assaulted a woman known to him at around 6.40am this morning (Friday, September 30).

On police arrival the 63-year-old man was seen at the house with what is believed to be a firearm and shots were heard shortly afterwards. The house was swiftly contained and the immediate area cordoned off to make sure there was no danger to members of the public.

Specialist firearms officers were deployed to the scene. After the police helicopter was able to confirm that the man no longer posed a threat to officers on the ground, officers went onto the garage roof and found the man with what appears to be serious gun shot wounds. Paramedics attended and the man is currently being taken by Kent air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel.

The woman is uninjured and had safely left the house. She is now being offered support by officers.
