A pensioner has been mugged on a busy Worthing road.
The incident occured just before 2am this morning behind Barclays Bank in Liverpool Road.
A spokesperson from Sussex Police said: “At 1.50am today (May 9) a 69-year old Brighton woman contacted the police in a distressed state, having just been in an altercation with a man in Worthing town centre, during which her bag was stolen.
“Specially trained officers are working with the woman to establish exactly what happened, and officers have been searching the area around Barclays Bank in Chapel Road and McDonalds in adjoining Liverpool Road for any forensic evidence.
“Enquiries are at an early stage and the full circumstances are not yet clear.
“Anyone who was in the area in the early hours of Monday morning and saw anything suspicious is asked to contact Sussex Police via firstname.lastname@example.org or call 101, quoting serial 81 of 09/05.”
The area has been cordoned off today with a police officer stationed outside.
