A FATHER-OF-TWO who fled from a psychiatric hospital he was a patient at and into the path of a HGV might not have been trying to end his own life.

Ryan Chapman, 29, ran from a peer support worker at Meadowfield Hospital last May while he was being escorted to an on-site pottery class.

Moments later he made his way onto the A27 and into the path of a lorry.

Mr Chapman died the following day as a result of a catastrophic brain injury suffered in the incident.

At the inquest into his death, coroner Penelope Schofield concluded it could not be established beyond reasonable doubt that Mr Chapman intended to kill himself.

She went on to state that while the hospital was not to blame for Mr Chapman’s death, there were certain aspects of care that required an ‘urgent’ review.
