UPDATE: Shoreham power station fire eyewitness accounts

SOUTHWICK residents living opposite Shoreham power station have given their account of the “chaos” of the fire last night (Thursday, March 1).

Steve Sajnog, 54, of Albion Street, said he was in his garage when he heard the initial explosion.

“I just heard this almighty bang, and the walls of my garage actually shook,” he said. “It sounded like someone had crashed into the side of the garage, so I went out to take a look.

“I saw huge black clouds of smoke billowing out of the side of one of the power station buildings. Then the flames came out of the top of the building, and they were sort of rising up and dying back down again. It was quite a sight.”

Ray Green, 74, also of Albion Street, said police had told him he and his wife may have to be evacuated.

“The police blocked off our road pretty quickly and told us that if there was a possibility we may have to be evacuated,” he said. “There were loads of cars around and police told them to turn back. All this time the flames were rising up out of the building and there was smoke everywhere.

“My wife was actually driving back from Shoreham at around 11.15pm and she was stopped right down at the end of the road. She was told she had to walk home, so I went to go and get her. It’s not right for a 74-year-old lady to have to walk in the dark all that way.”
