Two teams from Shoreham’s RNLI Lifeboat Station have been launched to assess the scene from the water.

On Twitter a spokesman for the charity said that volunteers were ‘checking for hot spots’ using a thermal imaging camera.

Earlier this evening, one eyewitness took to Facebook saying: “Just saw loads of smoke coming from that direction.”

Reports on Twitter have suggested there was a function taking place on the pier at the time which has been moved to another location.
