Utility bill switching scheme gets green light from council

In an effort to combat fuel poverty, Adur and Worthing councils have agreed to pilot the scheme, in which residents can sign up free of charge for cheaper bills.

As a high number of people would be involved in the scheme, the council can negotiate cheaper energy rates.

The scheme was first debated at a meeting of the full council in April, and councillor Hazel Thorpe, who proposed the debate, said the green light for the scheme was “brilliant news”.

She said: “It is a real positive move from the borough to actually take the initiative and start this scheme up.

“All the councillors agreed to it and the two officers involved in setting it up have a meeting this week with a company called iChoosr, who help do the work to secure the deals.”

The council has fast-tracked the initiative due to growing concerns that increasing numbers of households are being pushed into fuel poverty.

They believe widespread confusion over various energy tariffs is resulting in a reluctance to shop around, and most residents are consequently paying over-the-odds for their utility bills.
