Vandals wreck playground

AS the school holidays get under way, youngsters in a Lewes neighbourhood have been deprived of playground equipment by mindless vandals.

The wreckers set fire to equipment on the playground opposite Malling Community Centre.

A climbing frame and wooden play cabin were completely destroyed and other equipment was damaged. The repair bill is estimated at more than 9,000.

The arsonists had attempted to start a fire at the popular fun area on an earlier occasion but failed. On Tuesday last week, using clothing and a petrol-type substance, they succeeded.

The fire brigade and police are investigating. Said Acting Police Inspector Dave Padwick: This was a mindless piece of behaviour that has deprived local youngsters of their favourite play area. It s simply disgraceful and we are appealing for information. To burn that sort of facility ... words fail me.
