Southern Water engineers have repaired the leak and the new road surface has been laid.

A Southern Water spokesman said: “It is now setting. All being well, we expect the road to re-open this evening.”

Herald senior reporter Elaine Hammond was at the scene, outside the Red Lion pub, this morning to get an update on how work was progressing.

There were no signs to indicate the road closure until the roundabout junction with Upper Shoreham Road, so a number of cars were seen turning full circle once they realised they could not access the A27 via the A283.

Sussex Police said yesterday they had to close the road due to fears the surface could collapse.

“We were called at 10.50am on February 18 to reports of flooding on the road.

“At the request of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, we closed the road between the Clover Leaf Roundabout, at the A27, and the Red Lion pub, at the junction with Upper Shoreham Road, over concerns the road is collapsing.”

It was feared the road would have to be closed for several days, putting further pressure on drivers already affected by the closure of Grinstead Lane in Lancing and flooding on the A27 near the Sussex Pad traffic lights.
