Police said emergency services were called to Broadwater Street West in Worthing around 2.15pm, after a silver car was reported to have left the road and mounted the pavement, before colliding with the corner of the Pizzarelli takeaway, next to The Broadwater pub.

A passer-by described the scene as ‘absolute carnage’ with ‘pub tables all over the place’.

He said: “I was just sitting there at the table and it just came through. There was two tables that were demolished with two girls sitting there five minutes before.

“I just feel a little bit shocked. It all happened so quickly.”

Police said the man driving the car, believed to be in his 80s, was not injured, nor was anyone else.
