There were squeals and screams as they bounded in the waves opposite the new hotel in Marine Parade.

Stacey Turner, operations manager, said: “We are raising money for our chosen charity for the year, Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“Our plan was to just run into the sea. It was freezing!”

The money will go towards the Premier Inn Clinical Building, which will involve redeveloping and refurbishing the current cardiac wing. It will house a new surgery centre alongside inpatient wards for medical specialties.

Sam Bennett, assistant operations manager, added: “It was pretty cold but worth it for the children.

“We have already raised about £500 and are doing a few other small things to build on that before the total is announced when we open on Saturday.”

Jacqui Matten, 51, head housekeeper, was the oldest member of staff taking part.
