VIDEO: Five vehicles damaged in Worthing crash carnage

FIVE parked vehicles were damaged in Worthing last night (June 10) when a 4x4 crashed into them in a street which has since been described as an ‘accident black spot’.

The incident took place in Tarring Road, close to the junction of Shakespeare Road, at about 8.15pm yesterday evening, police said.

Witnesses report seeing a 4x4 colliding with a number parked cars in the street before coming to rest by the pedestrian footpath.

Police say only minor damage was caused by the collision.

Stone mason Simon Merritt lives in the street and was one of those whose van was damaged during the crash.

The 38-year-old father-of-two said his van was pushed onto the pavement due to the force of the impact. He is now concerned about the safety of the road.

“It’s lucky my van was in the way,” he said. “If it hadn’t have been the 4x4 could have gone into the front of room downstairs where two children were sleeping.

“If it had happened two or three hours earlier there would have been young mums and children walking home from the local schools nearby. It could have been a lot worse.”

He claims to have witnessed two similar crashes in the nine months he has lived in the road for.

Rickie Leggatt, director of Patridge Green-based masonry firm Margrasil, is Mr Merritt’s boss.

He agrees that something needs to be done.

“That piece of road is a notorious accident area,” he said. “Cars park on both sides and it’s a very tight gap to get through.

“If you get two cars coming from both ways there’s not always enough room to pass safely.

“It’s an accident black spot. I am just surprised that nothing has been done about it.”

He added: “Yes, it has caused us an inconvenience but at least no one was hurt. That’s the main thing.”
