VIDEO: Free parking in Worthing with the Herald

FOR the next fortnight, shoppers in Worthing's West End can park for free on Thursdays as part of a scheme run by local traders and town centre managers to combat the credit crunch.

The Town Centre Initiative, which brought Worthing the Birdman competition and the ice rink, is also in early talks with Worthing Council to seize control of a town centre car park from NCP.

Sharon Clarke, town centre manager, said: "Pricing in car parks is affecting the town, definitely.

"Now we hope to bring a little competition into the mix."

The West End scheme, which runs until April 16, is the brainchild of traders desperate to get people back into independent shops suffering from the economic downturn and what they feel is over-zealous parking enforcement.

Shoppers can complete the coupon printed in the Herald and hand it to one of the 30 participating traders in Montague Street and Rowlands Road, to receive a 1.20 refund, which could pay for between two hours and a full day's parking in nearby roads.

Pick up a copy of the Worthing Herald on Thursday, April 2, for more on this story and your free parking coupon.
