VIDEO: ‘Matchstick Man’ Mick exhibits his prized model

‘EVERY matchstick tells a story’ for one creative former cancer patient, who is exhibiting his prized creation for charity this month.

Mick Holloway, 58, of Littlehampton Road, Worthing, has put his ‘Mississippi’ paddle steamer on show at Bar Release, in Chapel Road, Worthing, to raise funds for Chestnut Tree House Hospice.

Pub-goers can guess the amount of matches it took to build the model, for the chance to win a crate of wine.

Mick, who took three years to build the model, while battling throat cancer, said: “I found it theraputic, as it takes your mind off the illness.

“I usually auction my models off for charity but this is the second time I’ve put this one on show, as I can’t get rid of it.

“Every matchstick, every one, could tell a story of my journey.”

Mick recently completed a large matchstick windmill, but had a fall and destroyed the fragile structure.

He said: “The treatment has affected my nervous system, and I had a fall. So now, I’m rebuilding the windmill and showing this one again.

“I don’t set a fund-raising target – every penny counts.”

The model will be on show in the pub for the next month, with donations to the charity welcome.
