Last week, The Herald reported that county councillors at a meeting of Worthing County Local Committee had agreed to run a £50,000 public consultation, to gauge opinion on the plans.

The decision came after years of lobbying by 20’s Plenty campaigners, who believe a reduced speed limit will reduce the number of accidents.

Should the consultation reveal significant public support, the scheme may be implemented, at a cost of around £350,000.

Speaking at the meeting, Goring councillor Steve Waight said it was important to ask the public about whether they wanted the limits.

He said: “To have a consultation and not abide by the results would be absolutely absurd.

“At least by doing a consultation, we have then kept to our commitment. It will do nothing for local politics if we don’t.”

After the decision, The Herald asked readers to give their opinions on the plans.

And the reaction from those commenting in the town centre, by letter and on social media, was mixed.
