Three fire crews from Worthing were called to Sugden Road at around 10.30am to tackle the blaze, which saw eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus enter the house.

As a result of the fire, the roof was destroyed, while the first floor suffered water damage.

Commenting on the Herald’s original story about the fire on Facebook, neighbour Julia Petretta said she witnessed two men climbing a ladder attached to scaffolding on the building to grab a gas canister at the top.

Julia said: “Hats off to you for risking both your lives, if that had exploded it could have been a whole lot worse.”
