Work began to fell the tree this morning and the central root is expected to be sawn off later today.

Regeneration works were disrupted yesterday afternoon when part of the tree fell onto the site where workers were digging as part of the scheme for the high street.

The tree was surveyed by Adur and Worthing Councils, and was found to be rotting near the base.

A spokesperson on the site said: “The council surveyed this tree this morning, and will be looking at the others in Liverpool Gardens in the next few days.

“The tree can look fine from the outside, but unfortunately cold temperatures and damp can make it start to rot. Unfortunately we have to take the whole thing down to avoid an incident.”

Alexander and Liverpool Terrace has been closed temporarily while the operation is carried out.
