Villagers support tree dressing for church’s 1,250th anniversary

Members of 16 groups and societies in the village have been making decorations since June and a total of 500 were tied to eight trees.

Organiser Norma Cummings, a long-standing member of Ferring Conservation Group, said: “The effect was magic and it is hoped despite wind and rain that they will remain on the trees for everyone to see throughout December.

“Tree dressing is an ancient custom which celebrates the beauty and importance of trees in our lives.

“During the first weekend in December, towns and villages around the country will have celebrated this custom which dates back to the Green Man but was revived by the charity Common Ground after 18million trees were lost in the great storm of 1987.”

Each group was assigned a trees around the green and afterwards, Ferring Parish Council provided hot drinks and nibbles in the Village Hall.

Later in the day, Ferring’s Christmas lights were switched on and Ferring Conservation Group manned a stall in the Village Green to raise money for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice.
