Vintage film has history group in Ferring ‘transfixed’

MEMBERS of a history group were ‘transfixed’ by a historical amateur film at their pre-Christmas meeting on Wednesday evening.

A vintage film documenting life in Ferring in the 1930s was shown at Ferring History Club’s latest meeting,

The film, made by F R Clarridge, an estate agent and amateur film-maker, when he first moved to the village, includes shots of a church fete, a greengrocers van and the Henty pub.

Ferring History Club committee member Eileen Godfrey said: “The audience sat transfixed as they watched film parts of the village still recognisable today.

“The film was an excellent record of village life in the 1930s. It is a very precious piece of archive.”

The meeting also included a buffet and quizzes for the members to take part in.

The group’s next meeting will be held in Ferring Village Hall, in Ferring Street, Ferring, on Friday, February 7, when Trevor Sapey will give a talk entitled Life on the Mary Rose.

Eileen said all visitors were welcome.
