VOTE: Are you worried about the impact of 14 weeks of roadworks on the A27?

NEWS of up to 14 weeks of roadworks on the A27 between Sompting and Shoreham received a mixed reaction from our online readers this week.

Some felt the disruption was justified for safety reasons while others felt improvements should have been made during earlier works.

Commenting on our Facebook pages, Steve Lovell thought the work should only take place at night. “It will be ridiculous in the daytime,” he said.

“At the very least, switch off the unnecessary Grove Lodge roundabout lights.”

Margaret Peacock agreed, saying: “Overnight only and this time do everything that needs doing so this doesn’t happen again for a very long time. Also, get the bypass passed and get the traffic out of this area.”

Sarah Lowden said she was “dreading it”.

“Going to be a nightmare trying to get through at rush hour,” she said. “I run a business in Sompting and it’s going to cause chaos with clients being held up on their way to and from me.”

Safety

Paul Ockenden, however, felt it was a good thing. “There are some wheel-bending potholes along the stretch at the moment,” he said.

“Perhaps once it’s all done they can up the speed limit a bit – the road can easily cope with more than 40.”

Arongant Tucknott said: “If it has to be done, it has to be done, it will be a nightmare with queuing traffic, but that’s life.

“I drove down that stretch when we had that bad spell of torrential rain and it was majorly flooded so I think it is a good idea the work takes place for safety.”

Lane closures

A 14-week scheme of roadworks on the A27 from Sompting to Shoreham is set to begin in September.

The work to improve drainage on the dual carriageway will take place on a two-mile section of the road between Dankton Lane, Sompting, and the Shoreham flyover.

Main work on the 14-week scheme will start on October 1, with a break over the Christmas period.

During the scheme, day work will be carried out between 9.30am and 4.30pm, with overnight work taking place between 8pm and 6am.

There will be lane closures during the day, and full closures, or a contraflow in operation, overnight.

Preparations will begin on Monday, September 17, and will largely take place off the main carriageways. Where work is on the carriageway, off-peak lane closures will be used.

Besides the drainage improvements, there will also be some technical repairs and parts of the road will be resurfaced from west of the Manor Road roundabout to Busticle Lane.

A public exhibition of the plans will be held from from 3pm to 7pm, at the Harriet Johnson Centre (the old community centre), in Loose Lane, Sompting, today (Thursday, August 30).
