VOTE: Do you support the teachers’ strike?

Around 20 schools in Worthing and 10 schools in Littlehampton will either close fully or partially, with schools in Lancing and Shoreham also being affected by the strikes.

Among the largest schools to close on the day will be Durrington High School, in The Boulevard, St Andrew’s High School, in Sackville Road, Worthing, Littlehampton Academy, in Hill Road, Thomas A’Becket First and Middle School, in Glebeside Avenue, Worthing, and Oakgrove College, in The Boulevard, Worthing.

The strike, which will affect thousands of schools across the country, is being led by the National Union of Teachers and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, which have said the pension changes will lead to teachers working longer hours for less.

Union leaders said the decision to strike had been made “reluctantly” and had been timed to “minimise disruption”.

On the day, public sector workers at Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, in Barrington Road, Durrington, and Worthing courts, in Richmond Road, Worthing, will also be setting up picket lines between 7am and 9am to strike over changes to public sector pensions.

To coincide with the strikes, a rally is being organised by Worthing Solidarity Network and other unions at Steyne Gardens.

Described by a Worthing Solidarity Network member as “the biggest demonstration Worthing will have ever seen”, the rally takes place from 9.30am to 2pm.
