VOTE: Name change plan for Worthing's Guildbourne Centre

WORTHING'S Guildbourne Centre may get a name-change to make it more attractive to shoppers.

Factory Outlets, which runs the centre, has discussed the possibility of a new name with the shopping mall traders, but nothing has yet been decided.

Consultant management surveyor Geoff Wheeler told the Herald this week: "Consideration is being given to a number of aspects to redefine the shopping mall's image.

"But the bottom line is that the name could stay the same."

Mr Wheeler said a number of things had to be considered with the option of a name-change, including the need for businesses to change their headed notepaper.

Traders' favour

But a name-change was favoured by some of the Guildbourne Centre traders.

Gavin O'Brien, proprietor of Easyweigh, said: "I think it is a good idea.

"For years, the Guildbourne Centre has been regarded badly, and the name 'Guildbourne Centre' does not indicate that it is a shopping centre; that it has a good variety of shops.

"You would not know that Wilkinson or Somerfield are here. On the frontage sign facing South Street square, it is not described as a shopping centre.

"I think, maybe, a new name would give the necessary impetus to take us forward."
