War veteran makes generous pledge to buy Bibles

Steve Stevens, a former pilot in the South African Air Force, has pledged to match any donations up to the cost of 300 Bibles, priced at £7.50 each, so that people in remote parts of Kenya have access to the holy book in their own language.

Mr Stevens said: “As I am 95 and virtually bed-ridden at present and with eternity staring me in the face, and knowing that I can’t take money to heaven, I am providing these needy people with the greatest book that has ever been written.

“I do hope that other people here in Worthing and on the south coast will feel as enthusiastic as I do to provide Bibles in the local language of these African people.”

Ed Harding, a committed Christian and long-time friend of Mr Stevens, encouraged him to donate money to the cause. Mr Harding recently introduced Mr Stevens to Bishop Andrew Ouma. Mr Ouma hopes to have the Bibles when he visits the Samburu, Turkana, Borana, Nubian, Luturiki, Ogiek, Kuria and Suba people around Easter.
