A yellow warning of rain is in place for much of the south of England from 6am on Wednesday, December 23, to 6am on Thursday, December 24 – two of the busiest travel days before Christmas.

The Met Office said there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings. There is also a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing hazardous conditions and where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

A spokesman added: “Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.”
