Sussex ‘earthquake’ reports disputed

Reports of an earthquake off the Sussex coast this morning (August 13) have been disputed.

It was initially thought a 3.0 magnitude quake had struck 30 miles from Eastbourne this morning (August 13) – according to information from earthquake-tracking organisation EMSC-CSEM.

However, the British Geographical Survey (BGS) has refuted these reports, suggesting another less-dramatic weather event could have sent ‘spurious’ signals.

Davie Galloway of the BGS said, “We have not recorded any earthquakes this morning.

“It’s probably some spurious signals. We have not had any signals on our equipment.

“There has not been an earthquake.”
