West Durrington homes may top 1,000

MORE than 1,000 homes could still be built at West Durrington - despite Worthing planners' rejection of an 875-unit development.

A full meeting of the council today (Wednesday, March 31) is considering a core strategy report which said about 700 homes was now considered likely to be the appropriate capacity.

There is also the option of using a further land parcel able to accommodate a further 375 dwellings, an option which would be reviewed if enough homes could not be built on brownfield land elsewhere to meet Worthng's planning targets.

The 875-homes scheme was rejected at the planning committee's March 15 meeting because of its "environmental impact", particularly on two pieces of land (parcels 5 and 6) containing ancient woodland and trees, and its adverse effect on protected species.

Councillors are being asked to approve the revised core strategy report, which says the West Durrington development is progressing through the planning system, and "represents the best opportunity to deliver a strategic level of development that helps to address the strategic objectives of the core strategy".

There is still 18 months to go before the core strategy is finally approved by the council.

Council leader Paul Yallop told the Herald on Tuesday: "We still have a Worthing target for new homes."

Mr Yallop added that each stage of the West Durrington planning application would be decided on its merits, as was the application before the committee on March 15.
