West Sussex County chief steps down

FOLLOWING weeks of uncertainty, West Sussex County Council announced chief executive Mark Hammond has left the authority.

FOLLOWING weeks of uncertainty, West Sussex County Council announced chief executive Mark Hammond has left the authority.

Mr Hammond stepped down after six years at the helm. A council spokesman said he left on amicable terms as the council made significant changes to its senior management.

He added: “As is customary under employment law when negotiating the terms of departure for a senior position, the council has entered into a legal agreement that requires both parties to maintain confidentiality about the details.”

As chief executive, Mr Hammond was responsible for the fundamental review of services, which has already delivered a total of £150million in savings.

“We are grateful for the direction he has provided and will be building on what he has achieved,” said leader Louise Goldsmith.

Chairman Mark Dunn said: “Like the rest of the public sector, we face unprecedented challenges and we are keen to harness new ideas and talent. But Mark’s departure does not in any way reflect on his conduct or capability.”
