The council said the register would provide a ‘comprehensive picture of the needs and disabilities’ of children and young people in West Sussex.

The council is also planning a discount card scheme to be running by the end of 2015, aimed at families with children with special educational needs and disabilities.

“The card will provide exclusive offers and money off deals for families and will help them find local activities which are disability-friendly,” said a council spokeswoman.

“The scheme will enable the county council to compile a disability register, which will provide a comprehensive picture of the needs and disabilities of children and young people within the county and will help with planning what services are needed.”

West Sussex County Council cabinet member for children – start of life Peter Evans said: “The card is a win-win situation. Not only will families have more opportunities to access fun activities, it will also give us valuable information about their needs.

“Similar cards in other areas have shown that families can save more than £600 if they use the discount card regularly.”
