Western Sussex Hospitals trust status in sight

THE board behind the region’s hospitals is pushing forward with its bid to become a Foundation Trust.

The Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust is meeting with representatives from the Department of Health next month to discuss its plans.

Becoming a Foundation Trust would mean more financial freedom and less control from central government; it is intended to help patients and residents have a greater say in the running of their local hospitals.

So far 6,900 people in the Chichester and Worthing areas have signed up to become members of the trust, meaning it is just 100 of its target of 7,000.

In July, the trust – which had hoped to be given the new status in December – suffered a setback after it was told to do more work on reducing waiting time and making sure if was hitting its budget.
