WH Smith taking over some Sussex Stationers but not Worthing

WH SMITH is taking over 22 branches of British Bookshops and Stationers, formerly Sussex Stationers, but the future of the Worthing store remains uncertain.

Branches bought by Smiths include the Shoreham, Southwick, Lancing, Rustington and Littlehampton stores, but not the Montague Street branch which opened in May, 2010.

Administrators from restructuring company Zolfo Cooper confirmed the deal went through today (Tuesday, February 8), and talks continue with potential buyers for the remaining shops.

The company went into administration on January 13, after poor trading over the Christmas period and cash flow problems.

The chain has 51 stores, based primarily in the South of England.
