Wild mural designed by ‘over-joyed’ Durrington schoolchildren

Tesco, in New Road, Durrington, contacted Durrington Middle School with an opportunity to fill an empty space in a creative way.

Pupils chose the theme of endangered animals for the project – a subject they had been ‘very interested’ in ever since it was mentioned in a student-led assembly.

Jane Cresswell, the school’s assistant head teacher, said: “The children were over-joyed.

“The winning designs were chosen based on certain criteria. The animal had to be in the appropriate habitat and had to be eye-catching enough to be part of the mural.”

Each year group has adopted and sponsored an endangered animal through the World Wildlife Fund.

Year four adopted a panda, year five a mountain gorilla, year six a dolphin and year seven a turtle.

All the submitted entries are set to be turned into tiles to go along the wall of the school’s swimming pool area.

The winning designs will also be put onto canvasses in the school as a long-term memento.
