Literary Society meets: It is Members’ Choice of Humorous Prose and Poetry this evening (Friday) at the Literary Society’s meeting. The choice of reading is yours and it promises to be a gathering of good wit. The meeting is in the Lower Court Hall and begins as usual at 7pm with light refreshments available, ready to start promptly at 7.30pm. Also this is a reminder that during the evening tickets will be on sale for the Literary Society’s July Outing to Small Hythe Theatre. The play is Ronald Harwood’s ‘Quartet’ and it should be a most enjoyable evening. Tickets cost £12.60 each and Linda would be grateful if you could pay by cheque, however, she will not be turning down cash if you leave your cheque book behind! Rain or Shine: The Tempest by William Shakespeare will be performed by the popular Rain or Shine Theatre Company tomorrow June 20th at 7pm in St Thomas’ School Field, Friars Road. Tickets are £13.50 adult and £6 child and the number to contact is 01797 224446 for bookings. If the weather is wet and tempestuous the performance will be relocated to nearby St Thomas’ Church. The Rain and Shine Theatre is a Gloucester based professional theatre company which specialises in outdoor summer tours of classical theatre. They regularly entertain in Winchelsea and the weather though sometimes challenging often has the effect of making their many performances even more outstanding.

Cellar Tour: Winchelsea Archaeological Society has arranged a guided Cellar Tour for Sunday June 21st at 2pm and the meeting place is Castle Street. The tours are 90 minutes long following a route around the town to visit many, often carefully concealed cellars, dating from the 13th century and once used in the wine trade with Gascony. To ensure your place please contact 01797 224446 and the cost is £5 p.p. with a Guide Book provided. The proceeds are in aid of the registered charity Archaeology in Winchelsea.

Tea Concert: The second Tea Concert for the year at St Thomas’ Church takes place next Saturday June 27th at 3pm. Also for a second year the talented Webb Family Trio will be entertaining with unusual and exciting music on the piano and with stringed instruments. Entry to these concerts is free but a Retiring Collection will be taken and there will be refreshments on sale after the concert.

FSW sponsored walk: A sponsored walk in aid of Family Support Work took place in the fascinating and lonely surroundings of Ashdown Forest on Easter Monday this year and over 100 walkers participated. Included on the Easter walk was Parochial Church Council member Sue Taberer who walked for Winchelsea. It was a warm day as Sue braved the muddy 8 mile trek alone and gasping for a drink, after missing the drinks stand along the way. This was her second year of undertaking the walk and she was very pleased to complete the trek and raise £320 for FSW this year. Well done to Sue! It was a good result and many thanks to her generous supporters. The overall total for FSW exceeded the grand sum of £3000.

Look out for fledglings: the baby crows in St Thomas’ Churchyard are starting to leave their nests and for some it’s not an easy matter. Last Sunday afternoon a fledgling wandered along the pathway trying to make sense of its surroundings. It was squawking loudly, its feathers stuck out while the adult crows watched from the church tower. A visitor concerned about the bird’s safety took appropriate action and gently picked it up and placed it amongst the foliage at the foot of the church. Usually there is no need to ‘rescue’ wildlife as the youngsters are doing fine and do not need help and often they are being watched attentively by their concerned parents. Most birds don’t fall from their nests but leave the nest a week to 10 days before they can fly. However if it is in the best interest of the parent crows nestling birds may be thrown out of their nests but such things happen relatively infrequently,

Friday’s Lunch: The Fellowship Lunch takes place on the last Friday in the month, this being June 26th for this month, at 12 for 12.30pm in the Community Hall. It is also the last Lunch before the summer break and if you would like to go please book soon on 01797 227168 to enable the catering to be planned. All are invited to attend and these are very appetising three course lunches with a request for a donation to charity.

Hire of hall: Now that summer is almost here and an influx of visitors is beginning to arrive at the local caravan sites it is a good time to plan various activities and events. The ideal venue is the Community Hall which is centrally located near the beach, pub, doctor’s surgery and shops.
