Windfarm is given the go-ahead

THE RAMPION off-shore windfarm has been given the green light by the Government.

The project, which will be visible from the shores of Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham and Littlehampton, was approved on Wednesday morning, as the Herald went to press.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said: “We’re driving investment in our energy security, and our plans have made us number one in the world for investment in offshore wind energy.

“This project is great news for Sussex, providing green jobs as well as driving business opportunities right across the country in a sector with a clear road map for long-term growth.”

Construction, which will see cabling diverted through Brooklands, up to an electrical sub-station in Bolney, will begin in 2015.

It will take four years to build, with the potential to generate power for 450,000 homes.

The developer estimates the first generation of power will be produced in either 2018 or 2019.

The project is expected to support over 750 jobs and bring over £2 billion of investment.
