Witness appeal after crash which closed A27

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after two cars and a lorry crashed on the A27 near Arundel.

The incident occurred yesterday (Thursday, March 13) just after 2pm near the White Swan Hotel, causing closure of the A27 in both directions.

One of the car drivers, a 61-year-old woman from Littlehampton was taken to St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The 36-year old man, who was arrested following the collison has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The road was fully re-opened again at 5.33pm.

A dog who had been in the car driven by the woman was treated for injuries at the scene, then taken to a vet for specialist treatment but died overnight.

Head of crime and operations for the West Downs Division Supt Lance Gray was at the scene and helped to treat the dog for its injuries.

He said: "When I arrived at the scene the rescue was well under way and a seriously injured lady was being taken to St Richards hospital escorted by a police car.

"Fortunately, a local equine vet was nearby and was able to tend to a spaniel that had been badly injured in the crash.

"I couldn't pass any injured dog by without helping, and I assisted the vet to transfer the dog to a small animal vet for specialist treatment.

"The dog had two broken legs, a punctured chest and was clearly in shock, but made barely a whimper."
