World’s fastest woman lived in Worthing

A WOMAN who was the fastest sprinter in the world almost 100 years ago, moved to Worthing as a pensioner and died in a road accident.

The fascinating tale of Mary Lines, who was among the pioneering party of British women who represented their country at the Women’s Olympiad held in Monte Carlo in Easter, 1921, features in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

The book was released last week, and also features details of the lives of 130 other former Worthing residents.
