A CENTENARIAN from Worthing marked her 100th birthday by raising £2,000 through a celebratory charity concert.

It was a family affair at Irene White’s charity concert, as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren showcased their talents to an audience of 190 people at the Jubilee Hall in Greenland Road.

Acts included musical performances, singing, ballet and hula-hooping, with all proceeds going to the Helping Hands Brazil charity, which was set up by Irene’s daughter and son-in-law three years ago.

The Christian charity supports children living in the slums of Brazil, by providing them with tools and supplies to help them with their learning, and educating them on issues such as hygiene, personal safety and health.

Son-in-law Richard Green, 67, said Irene – who lives in Pentland Road, Worthing – was overwhelmed with the turn out for the occasion.

“It was fantastic how many people came,” he said. “We had full capacity. Irene attends the New Life Church and a lot of the congregation came, as well as around 40 members of family and friends. It was a fantastic occasion, everyone really enjoyed themselves.”

Richard said it was Irene’s idea to turn her birthday into a fund-raiser for charity.

He said: “Irene is a Christian lady with a long-standing faith. She always has a positive attitude towards life and she never, ever has a bad word to say about anyone. She really is radiant – she really shines, and looks so much younger than her age.

“The event really reflected Irene’s attitude to life, and the money will go a long way in Brazil.”
