Earning the esteemed green beret was tough but rewarding, according to the former Northbrook College student.

Jamie, 21, from Worthing, studied both the Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Uniformed Services at the Broadwater campus before being selected for the programme at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM), in Lympstone, Devon.

During his 32 weeks on one of the toughest and longest basic training programmes in the world, he learned the combat skills needed for an elite soldier, as well as the basics, such as marching and looking after his kit.

Jamie said: “Training was extremely hard but rewarding and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help and guidance from the Uniformed Services course at Northbrook College.”

He said the Marines training programme included patrolling, setting ambushes, cliff assaults and fighting in built-up areas.

During the final week, he had to complete four commando tests, including endurance, a nine-mile speed march, Tarzan assault course and 30-mile march across Dartmoor, with equipment and rifle, in less than eight hours.

Neil Cockcroft, public services tutor, said: “I am extremely proud of Jamie and his achievement. From the outset he was a very committed learner who had a dream of joining the Royal Marines.

“Jamie worked tirelessly at college and progressed through the Level 2 and Level 3 programmes gaining distinctions in both.

“Jamie is now the founding member of the Northbrook College Uniformed Service role of honour, where his picture will be displayed in the classroom as an inspiration to those future students who dare to dream.”
