Sections of the carriageway will also be resurfaced between Offington Corner and Cote Street.

Ahead of the work, a public exhibition is being held at Worthing College on Thursday, March 24, from 3pm to 7pm.

Representatives from Highways England and its contractors will be available to answer questions about the work.

Highways England asset manager for Sussex, Peter Philips said: “Upgrading the lights and resurfacing the road will help maintain safe and reliable journeys for drivers on the A27 and those that live next to it.

“I advise anyone interested in the scheme to attend the exhibition or get in contact with us.”

The street lighting replacement will be carried out overnight, using five full closures of the A27 from April 18 and is expected to be completed in early August.

Additional work will be carried out during the daytime with no impact to the A27.

The resurfacing will be carried out using overnight closures of the A27 between Grove Lodge and the Clapham junction.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place during the closures.

A survey was carried out in 2015 asking residents and local businesses whether they wanted noisier but a shorter duration or quieter and a longer duration for the roadworks.

The resounding response was in favour of the noisier but shorter duration using mechanical extraction of the old lights.
