Worthing blooms as spring flower shows come to town

WORTHING was blooming this weekend '“ with two horticultural societies holding their spring shows.

Worthing Horticultural Society hosted its spring show at Offington Park Methodist Church hall, in South Farm Road, on Saturday.

Anne Locke, publicity officer for the society, said the show went very well, in spite of the unpredictable weather in the lead-up to it.

She added: "It was a lovely day. One of the most spectacular entries was Linda Charman's vase of flowers, which was really beautiful."

Anne said the colourful displays of narcissi, along with other flowering and foliage pot plants, stood out this year.

The day's cup winners included Fred White, who took the Col. Stern challenge cup for the best vase of narcissi and the Daffodil Society bronze medal for the best exhibit of narcissi in classes one to 23.

Janice Shambrook won the H & A Pullen-Burry Ltd challenge cup for the most points in classes one to 37 and Linda Charman got the Freeman Hardy and Willis cup for her vase of mixed flowers '“ the best exhibit in show.

Meanwhile, around 80 people attended the 65th annual Clapham and Patching Flower Show and Horticultural Society spring show in the village hall on the same day.

More than 145 entries were submitted to the competition, which also rewarded the best bread and jam makers in the villages.

John Griss, from the society, said: "The day went really well. We had a very good attendance this year and the day was enjoyed by all."

Mr Griss added that some of the tulip flower and children's categories were particularly strong this year.

The best in show award was given to Sue Griss, for her display of flowers in a pair of Timberland boots.
