Worthing charity's bid to raise money for abandoned pets' operations

THIS is Deca the dog, which has a broken leg after being sat on by its owner.

After finding out the five-month-old's veterinary treatment would cost 600, the owner then abandoned the cross-breed, and now Worthing animal charity WADARS has been left to foot the bill.

The charity, Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service, says it has seen an increase in owners abandoning pets due to rising vet bills, and is often approached as a last resort.

On Sunday, April 18, to raise funds for veterinary operations for dogs like Deca, a charity walk has been organised.

Billy Elliott, animal rescue officer for WADARS, said: "For 600, Deca's worth it. The walk's the last chance for dogs like Deca."

Deca, who is now looking for a new home, is described by Billy as a "friendly dog, suitable for a family with older children".

Another dog, which had its shoulder broken when it tumbled down a flight of stairs, needed an operation that cost 2,000.

WADARS was again able to save the dog from being put down but the huge costs of treatment, combined with the cost of caring for the abandoned animals, puts pressure on the charity's financial reserves.

To help fund WADARS, dog owners and keen amblers are encouraged to join the walk this weekend.

The sponsored walk begins at 11am from the car park at Highdown Hill and will take walkers to The Spotted Cow in Angmering, where a stop will be made for refreshments.

Sponsor forms are available from WADARS at 33 West Buildings, Worthing, or by calling 01903 200506, or from any branch of Grove Lodge.

Alternatively, walkers can pay 5 on the day to join in.
