Worthing church facing the bulldozers

A REVISED scheme to provide sheltered homes on the site of a 32-year-old East Worthing church will be considered by borough planners this summer.

Emmanuel Church, on the corner of Brougham Road and Chatham Road, will be demolished to make way for a Worthing Homes development of 12 two-bedroom and two one-bedroom apartments.

A previous scheme was rejected by Worthing planners because of its visual impact on neighbours.

Emmanuel Church was built in 1976 to replace what is now the church hall, which was erected in 1911 as a "plant" church to St George's Parish Church.

Despite protests from some parishioners, the church felt that reduced congregations meant operations at St Emmanuel must be suspended, and the site sold to help fund the church's future work in East Worthing.
