Worthing church's £1million repair bill

ONE of Worthing's premier churches faces an uncertain future in the face of repair costs which could be as high as £1million.

Parishioners of the Grade II-listed St Botolph's Church, Heene, have been warned that such a degree of fund-raising is not feasible, and is possibly "not even a morally correct option".

Details of the "serious and delicate" matter were revealed worshippers at St Botolph's in a long statement by churchwardens Rob MacBain and David Mason.

The statement says the 1873 building is not in a dangerous or unsafe state, but extensive and ongoing work needs carrying out.

"So we now need to face the reality of our situation, which we feel is that during the next few years we will continue the struggle to pay our way and keep things going, and that during this period we prepare to make the decision about the future of this parish church, the alternatives, and what we are prepared to do about it," says the statement.

The churchwardens are asking for parishioners' views and comments, which can be expressed at the church's annual meeting in the St Botolph Rooms on Tuesday, April 21 (7pm).
