Worthing club pays tribute to D-Day heroes

There was singing, discussion and poetry as the Phoenix 50+ Friday Club paid their respects at Worthing Leisure Centre.

Jeanie Dickenson, club co-ordinator, came up with the idea when she realised the club’s June get together fell on the same day as the 70th anniversary of the landings.

She said: “It was just wonderful. It was absolutely fantastic. I’m one of those people, I get an idea, put it to the members and they are so enthusiastic. I think 100 people coming together is quite something. If I had rehearsed it for a month it wouldn’t have been better.”

The commemoration took place in the club’s coffee break. A talk about D-Day was followed by a one-minute silence.

The group then sang White Cliffs of Dover, accompanied by Nigel Ratcliffe on the keyboard, before Jeanie read a poem called For Johnny – by John Putney. They finished by singing the Vera Lynn classic, We’ll Meet Again.
