Worthing danger road plea

Cyril Dyer, known to his friends as John, of Sea Lane, Ferring, died on the notorious stretch of the westbound dual-carriageway on Wednesday, March 28, after he was involved in a collision with another car.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to free Mr Dyer but despite paramedics' attempts to save him, he died at the scene.

The female driver of the other car had to be taken to Worthing Hospital with serious ankle, leg and arm injuries.

or the past few years, residents have campaigned for a reduced speed limit following a spate of accidents there.

But last year the Highways Agency said there was no evidence or statistics to support a lower speed limit there.

In December, 2005, Sharon Hewer, Clive Hancock and Ivor Bingham were killed when a van ploughed into them outside the Coach and Horses pub.

And in April last year, hairdresser, Kerry Moss died on the A27 at Offington, while trying to cross the road just two miles from December's crash.

Tim De Luca Smith, of Hollyacres, just off the A27, said: "Speed is the biggest problem here and I believe the only way to prevent more fatalities is for it to be reduced.

Worthing West MP Peter Bottomley, who has been extremely vocal in his condemnation of the A27, has taken the matter up with the ministry of roads and transport.

He added: "I'm very sorry they didn't take effective action after the last series of accidents that included fatalities.

"Whatever the reason, this stretch of road is claiming too many lives. Worthing residents and travellers from elsewhere deserve better protection and safety."

Highways Agency spokesman, Martin Deller said it was still looking to close the gaps and was keen to get it completed this year.
