Worthing eco teen inspires school for Earth Hour

A WORTHING student is so passionate about saving the environment, he has urged others to follow in his footsteps.

Worthing High School pupil Scott Roberts, 15, is arranging for each of the four communities at the school to adopt an animal, through the WWF.

The year 11 student has also spoken to all the students to encourage everyone to take part in the global WWF Earth Hour 2010 - a massive "lights-off" event on Saturday, March 27.

Scott, from Goring, explained: "With the Earth Hour, the big thing is it is a big demonstration that makes a difference.

"I want to get the school more involved with the WWF and this is the kind of event that will lead on to the other things I am planning."

Fund-raising

Scott's aim is to organise various fund-raising events at the school, such as cake sales, to raise the 3 a month each community needs to sponsor one of the WWF animals.

The animals up for adoption include giant pandas, polar bears, orangutan, bottlenose dolphins, Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, black rhinos, Amur leopards, hawksbill turtles, and adelie penguins.

Scott's passion for the environment has been inspired by his geography teacher, Mr Einar Stevens, and the disappointing outcome of the Copenhagen climate change meeting last year.

"I remember my geography teacher said he was not anticipating much coming out of it and it came to my mind we need to be more active," Scott said.

Earth Hour 2010 takes place on Saturday, March 27, from 8.30pm until 9.30pm.
