The Bacon family are travelling with up to 40 other British car and film enthusiasts to take part in the 26th annual Italian Job rally.

Dad Phil will be driving one of only three remaining Classic Ford Thames ‘Dormobiles’ still running in England, while his wife Angie and two daughters Hannah and Emily making up a family convoy in two new Mini Coopers.

The return journey to Italy will clock up around 1800 miles each in a navigational rally that over the past 27 years has raised millions for children’s charities in the UK and overseas.

Phil Bacon is currently restoring the Dormobile and aims to retain every ounce of its original charm right down to the 17 horse power engine. He will then have it vinyl wrapped to replicate the Dormobile from the 1969 film, The Italian Job.

Phil said: “The Italian Job is always spoken about with great fondness by my whole family, so a return was inevitable and it was just a matter of when. I was delighted when my search for a rare vehicle such as the Dormobile proved fruitful and I’m delighted that it’ll be the first time one of the most significant vehicles from the original film is taking part in the rally!”

Some 25 teams have already signed up to take part in the event, and for 10 days from October 25 until their return to British shores on November 5, they will be tasked to find their way around a predetermined route through Italy, using nothing more than a set of instructions in the official Italian Job Road Book.
