Worthing flash floods: one year on

A year ago today, on July 28, 2014, Worthing was hit by flash flooding following torrential downpours. Homes and shops were damaged while the underpass at Worthing railway station and parts of Homefield Park were left underwater.

Emma Lyons, of Becket Road, Worthing, was left to deal with damage after the flood left her garden and kitchen knee-deep in water. Speaking at the time, she said: “It was just horrendous. I have never known it to come down like that. In all honesty, I don’t think it could be helped. It was just freak weather conditions. All I could think about doing was getting as much stuff upstairs as possible.”

And the weather meant bad news for commuters, too. Reporter Dan Cain’s partner, Natalie, captured the video, above, of the floods near the station, with water in the road lapping up against the bonnets of cars. Trains and bus routes were badly affected, and roads – including Newland Road, also pictured – suffered damage in parts of Worthing. A lightning strike in the Hove area led to a loss of power on the rail network between Hove and Littlehampton.
