Worthing hospital worker awarded for finding wedding ring

Jenna Gander, a Patient Advice and Liason Service officer at the hospital helped the daughter of a patient find her mother’s wedding ring – after it was not returned with her belongings.

Jenna was nominated by Andrew Jones, integrated breast care group manager at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which also runs St Richard’s Hospital.

Papers set to be discussed by the trust board, said: “Andrew explained that the daughter of a patient who had died spoke to Jenna about her mother’s wedding ring and the fact that it had not been returned with her belongings.

“The daughter was distressed and Jenna began to investigate its whereabouts. He said that Jenna spoke to the ward but a search did not find the wedding ring. Her investigation then moved to pharmacy in case it had been put into the patient’s bag of returned drugs.

“A long search took place through all the packs of returned drugs which are stored in a large number of cages.”

The ring was found and Jenna was able to call the daughter to say the ring had been found.

Mr Jones said: “I was touched by this story, as being able to have that ring was clearly extremely important to the daughter and it would have been all too easy to give up.”
